Abstract:This article explores the biography of the Japanese Noh performer Zeami (1363-1443) and analyzes his understanding of the design of Noh performance space based on remarks he made in the early Muromachi period (1338-1573). Then, the authors compare Zeami’s scale system with that specified in the early-Edo architectural manual Shomei and examine the changes between the two systems.
